PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2003-2004
The second half of 2003 started off with two talks given by
Cambridge University professors, Professor Peter Nolan and Professor
Mike Gregory, who came to Malaysia (whatever happened to the
Oxford University professors?). Both talks were not organised
by the Society, but members of the Society were invited because
of the origin of the speakers.
These intellectual activities were followed by a relaxing and
informal dinner hosted by a committee member of the Society,
Elizabeth Lee, in honour of the Cambridge University Interviewers
for Malaysia. There was then a lull before things started to
pick up again with the Vice-President (Oxon) hosting a dinner
for members at his home in February 2004. The following month
was the first opportunity to bring out the black-tie, for the
Annual Boat Race Dinner which was held at Bankers’ Club.
Cambridge again took the honours, making the year’s activities
of the Society seem dominated by Cambridge University.
Two committee members, Terence Mahoney and Elizabeth Lee, then
represented the Society in doing its bit for education, when
they gave career talks to students in Tengku Kurshiah College
in Negeri Sembilan. A review of these activities that I have
alluded to is attached for your reference.
In May, we sent out a feedback form to all members via email,
fax and /or snail mail in order to obtain feedback on the types
of activities/events members would like the Society to organise
for them. We hoped that with this feedback, The Society would
be better able to cater to the needs of its members. Only 10%
responded, and the events that members ranked in terms of interest
were a) talks by prominent Malaysian Statesmen/Businessmen (66%)
b) cocktail parties (63%) c) Boat Race (47%) and Programmes
with the Malaysian Royal Families (37%). Events that members
would like to see more of are a) informative talks by prominent
individuals (61%) b) fun and social events (61%) c) networking
events for business/career advancement (50%) and d) charitable
events (37%).
The Society has also revamped its website to make it more friendly,
and members are encouraged to visit it regularly to keep informed
about upcoming activities. Members are also advised to update
any change of particulars through the website, which is very
convenient and will ensure that you get informed about any goings-on.
The President (that is myself), Secretary and Treasurer, have
to retire from our positions at today’s Annual General
Meeting, having served the Society in these current capacities
for the maximum allowable three consecutive years. In these
past three years, as the Treasurer’s Report will verify,
we are proud to say that the committee has managed to increase
the funds of the Society from RM58,000 to RM180,000. Membership
of the Society has also risen from 320 to 438 over the same
period.
Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my present
committee. It has been a pleasure working with all of you in
furthering the aims of the Society.
The President,
Tan Sri Ahmad Abdullah
