OSEAN/BARIO PROJECT
Bario is a remote village deep in the
interior of Borneo. The total population is approximately 1,300
people. The average monthly household income is approximately
US$ 5.06 and only 31% have a secondary education. 29% of the
population have not had schooling.
The OSEAN project aims to alleviate,
through solar power systems, the shortage of electricity in
an ICT Telecentre in the remote community of Bario, in Sarawak,
Malaysia. The project aims to raise the standard of living in
Bario by facilitating development of tourism as a source of
income, improving IT literacy and penetration in rural schools
and remote communities, connecting the community’s businesses
with urban trade, transport and commerce systems, and facilitating
Teleworking and Telemedicine (that are important because of
Bario’s remoteness). The total cost of the project is
estimated to be only US$15,000.
The Team comprises 15 students from the
UK, USA, Singapore and Malaysia, from University of Cambridge,
UNIMAS and Columbia University. The Team is partnering with
UNIMAS, University of Cambridge and Engineers without Borders
(EWB)-Cambridge. The goals of OSEAN are to focus on sustainable
development projects in Southeast Asia and to develop a network
of young individuals who wish to contribute to the development
of Southeast Asia.
This event aims to promote awareness
of the project and to raise funds to buy ICT equipment, and
to pay transportation, travel, accommodation and other expenses.
The success of this pilot project and
the experience gained will be the seed from which the non-profit
organization, to be officially named The Organisation for Sustainable
Engineering in South East Asian Nations, (OSEAN), will be launched.
Many thanks for your support.
